NEW YORK -- Rather than ban home plate collisions outright, Major League Baseball and its players adopted a rule limiting them this season. Ryan Switzer Jersey . In what both sides said was a one-year experiment, the rule allows collisions if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runners direct path to home plate, and if the catcher goes into the basepath to field a throw to the plate. "Its not a radical departure from what it had been," Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said. The new rule, 7.13, states "a runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate)." A runner violating the rule shall be declared out, even if the fielder drops the ball. "Its good, I think it takes away the malicious intent behind the play at the plate," Texas Rangers catcher J.P. Arencibia said. "Obviously the runner doesnt always have to slide, and the catcher still has the ability to block the plate once he has the ball in hand." Along with the rule, the sides agreed to a pair of comments umpires use for interpretation. The first comment says "the failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runners lowering of the shoulder, or the runners pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation." The comment says players who slide appropriately are not in violation of the rule. The second comment says that "unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score." The runner shall be declared safe if the catcher violates that provision. In addition, it is not a violation "if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable." "There are some things that often times can make the water a little muddy," union head Tony Clark said after meeting with the New York Yankees. "Over the course of the off-season, the concern was protecting players, but trying to draw up something that not only made sense on paper, but also was going to make sense to the players that were playing on the field." The umpire crew chief can use the new video-review system to determine whether the rule was violated. "It stops guys just going out of their way just to try to dislodge the baseball when they (catchers) have the plate," Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said. Debate over plate collisions has intensified since May 2011, when San Franciscos Buster Posey was injured as the Marlins Scott Cousins crashed into him at the plate. Posey, an All-Star catcher, sustained a broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle, an injury that ended his season. In Game 5 of last years AL championship series, Detroit backstop Alex Avila was pulled a couple of innings after being run over at the plate by Bostons David Ross, a fellow catcher. "I think its fair. A runners path is to home plate," Oakland catcher Derek Norris said. "Any deviation and hes not trying to score, hes trying to harm. A runner going out of the basepath trying to break up a double play is declared out. This is the same concept as a double-play slide." Jourdan Lewis Jersey . Giants manager Bruce Bochy told The Associated Press of the decision before NL West-leading San Francisco opened a 10-game homestand Monday night with the first of three games against second-place Arizona. Ryan Switzer Youth Jersey . Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings (3) - Early goal against was on the power play. Each week, well take a look at some top performers from the CFL, with an eye to looking ahead to some matchups that could be favourable for TSN Fantasy Football, CFL Edition, presented by Joseph Abboud. Here are some of the best from Week 5 and players to watch for Week 6: TOP PERFORMERS Dan LeFevour, QB, Hamilton (21-for-30, 361 YDS, 1 TD passing, 109 YDS, 13 carries, 1 TD rushing vs. Ottawa) - Apparently Zach Collaros can take his time recovering from a big hit by Edmontons Odell Willis on July 4, as hes been placed on the six-game injured list. LeFevours monster game against Ottawa should leave the TiCats relatively comfortable with their QB situation in Collaros absence. LeFevour has completed 73.1% of his passes this year, and he can run, so he should be at least adequate as a fill-in while Collaros is out. C.J. Gable, RB, Hamilton (167 YDS, 1 TD, 9 touches vs. Ottawa) - Not a lot of opportunities for Gable against the Redblacks, but he sure made the most of it, averaging 18.6 yards every time he touched the ball. Sure, its against an expansion team, but the second-year back out of USC is providing plenty of reason for Hamilton to give him a bigger role in the offence going forward. Will Ford, RB, Saskatchewan (137 YDS, 3 TD, 20 touches vs. Toronto) - The third-year runner out of South Carolina State, who played for Winnipeg the past two seasons, had a career day against the Argos. He rushed for 156 yards in a game against Calgary last season, but three touchdowns made last weeks performance the most productive day of his relatively brief career. PLAYERS TO WATCCH IN WEEK 6 Darian Durant, QB, Saskatchewan - Off to a slow start, completing fewer than 55% of his passes (compared to a career mark of 61. Chidobe Awuzie Youth Jersey. 2%), Durant also has five touchdowns and five interceptions through his first four games in 2014. He didnt need to throw much in a rout of the Argos last week, but Durant gets a matchup against an Ottawa team that has the leagues worst pass defence. Seems like a good time for a breakout performance. Jock Sanders, RB, Calgary - As well as the B.C. Lions defence has played, ranking second in the league with 291.6 yards against per game, they are more susceptible against the run and Sanders contributed 93 yards on 17 touches against Edmonton last week. Sanders, who has mostly been a return specialist, with a total of eight carries in three previous seasons with the Stampeders, is the primary replacement for Jon Cornish while the reigning Most Outstanding Player is recovering from a concussion. Marcus Henry, WR, Ottawa - A big target, at 6-foot-5, Henry had a productive game (10 REC, 138 YDS, 1 TD at Hamilton) in a losing effort last week and while the Redblacks could have their troubles against Saskatchewan this week, the Riders defence has allowed 259.3 passing yards per game, ranking seventh in the league. Henry may not duplicate the best game of his career, but there is room for him to step into a bigger role for Ottawa moving forward.
